My http://folklore.org site is a repository of anecdotes about the development of Apple’s original Macintosh computer. One of my favorite features is the way it displays a relevant quotation under the team photo near the top of the index page.

When I was developing the site, I assembled a collection of quotes that reflect on the spirit and values of Apple and the Macintosh, and have slowly added to it in the following years. Here are some of my favorites:

The best way to predict the future is to invent it. — Alan Kay

People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware. — Alan Kay

Good artists copy, great artists steal. — Picasso via Steve Jobs

Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union. — Frank Lloyd Wright

The details are not the details. They make the design. — Charles Eames

Hell, there are no rules here – we’re trying to accomplish something. — Thomas Edison

Make it as simple as possible. But no simpler. — Albert Einstein

The physicist’s greatest tool is his wastebasket. — Albert Einstein

The creation of art is not the fulfillment of a need but the creation of a need. The world never needed Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony until he created it. Now we could not live without it. — Louis Kahn

Less is more. — Mies van der Rohe

To love what you do and feel that it matters – how could anything be more fun? — Katharine Graham

If everything is under control, you’re going too slow. — Mario Andretti

The only way to do great work is to love what you do. — Steve Jobs
